Thermal Imaging
Constantly feeling cold even when the heater is on full blast? Your home might have hidden leaks letting your warmth and hard-earned money drift away. Our infrared thermal imaging camera spots exactly where those leaks are.
What Is Thermal Imaging and What Does It Tell You?
Think of thermal imaging as a special camera that shows your home's "cold spots." It uses infrared heat sensors to create a color-coded map of temperature differences across your walls, ceilings, windows, and doors.
Areas losing heat show up in distinct colors, making invisible problems visible instantly. These cold spots are often completely hidden from sight, but they are likely the reason you are wrapping up in extra layers and facing steep energy bills every month. By identifying exactly where your home is losing heat, we can target the right fixes and get that warmth back where it belongs -- inside your home.
The Thermal Imaging Process
Inspect
Our BPI-certified technician walks through your home with a professional infrared camera, scanning walls, ceilings, windows, and doors.
Detect
The camera reveals temperature differences invisible to the naked eye, showing exactly where cold air enters and warm air escapes.
Analyze
We review the thermal images to identify the severity of each problem area and prioritize which fixes will save you the most energy.
Resolve
You receive a clear action plan with targeted solutions like air sealing, insulation upgrades, and weather-stripping to eliminate heat loss.
How NY Energy Project's Thermal Imaging Benefits You
Our thermal imaging service targets problem areas in your home with precision. Instead of guessing where heat is escaping, we show you exactly where the issues are. We then use professional-grade products to seal gaps and add insulation where it matters most, ensuring your house stays comfortable in every season.
The result is a home that holds onto the air you are paying to heat or cool. Many homeowners see noticeable reductions in their monthly energy bills after addressing the issues our thermal imaging uncovers. No more drafts, no more cold rooms, just consistent comfort throughout your home.

Common Heat Escape Points We Detect
With thermal imaging, we can spot the typical culprits responsible for heat loss in NYC homes. These are the areas where your energy dollars are most likely slipping away.
Windows
Single-pane and poorly sealed windows are among the biggest sources of heat loss in NYC homes, allowing warm air to escape year-round.
Exterior Doors
Gaps around door frames, worn weather-stripping, and inadequate seals let conditioned air leak out and outside air rush in.
Bay and Picture Windows
These larger window installations often have more joint points where air infiltration occurs, making them common problem areas.
Exhaust Vents
Bathroom and kitchen exhaust vents can create pathways for air leakage when not properly sealed around their housing.
Recessed Lighting
Can lights installed in ceilings below attic spaces create openings that allow heated air to escape directly into unconditioned areas.
Storm Doors
Improperly fitted or aging storm doors may not provide the insulating barrier they were designed for, leading to drafts and energy waste.
Under-Insulated Roofs
Heat rises, and without adequate roof and attic insulation, a significant amount of your heating energy escapes through the top of your home.

Frequently Asked Questions About Thermal Imaging
What is thermal imaging for homes?
Thermal imaging uses an infrared camera to detect temperature differences on surfaces in your home. It creates a color-coded image showing exactly where heat is escaping or cold air is entering. Blue and purple areas indicate cold spots (heat loss), while red and orange areas show warm spots. This reveals hidden problems like missing insulation, air leaks, and moisture issues.
How much does thermal imaging cost in NYC?
Thermal imaging is included free as part of our comprehensive home energy audit. There is no separate charge. We scan your entire home with professional infrared cameras and include the thermal images in your energy audit report.
What can thermal imaging detect in my home?
Thermal imaging can detect missing or damaged insulation in walls, ceilings, and floors. It reveals air leaks around windows, doors, electrical outlets, and plumbing penetrations. It can also identify moisture problems, HVAC duct leaks, and areas where pipes may be at risk of freezing.
When is the best time for thermal imaging?
Thermal imaging is most effective when there is a significant temperature difference between inside and outside your home, typically at least 20 degrees. Winter is ideal because the temperature contrast makes heat loss very visible. However, we can perform effective scans in summer too, detecting where hot air infiltrates your cooled home.
Do I need to prepare my home for thermal imaging?
For the best results, we recommend keeping your home at normal temperature for at least 4 hours before the scan. Avoid moving large furniture away from exterior walls, as we want to see real-world conditions. The scan is completely non-invasive and takes about 30-45 minutes.
Will I get copies of the thermal images?
Yes. All thermal images are included in your energy audit report. You will see side-by-side comparisons of regular photos and infrared images showing exactly where your home is losing energy. This makes it easy to understand the recommendations and prioritize improvements.
